Spring Fever: New Trends for Sunny Days

Spring is here, which means feminine details, on-trend prints, and events galore. Here at Soma, we have everything you need for weddings, graduations, and afternoons in the sun. Our dedicated Trend team travels to Europe, studying the runways, and translating the newest fashions into pieces perfect for your spring refresh. We sat down with Holly Erickson, VP of Product Development for Soma, to discuss what’s new for the sunny season.

What inspired the new collections of April?

Holly: April was inspired by the ultra femininity of today’s modern woman. We were inspired by the French countryside and the beautiful, sophisticated structure of the French villas. We just loved the decorative scrollwork. We also drew from feminine wallpapers, soft and flowy draperies and bed linens, delicate lace sheers, and the wonder of the French Provincial garden.

That sounds gorgeous. What else is new for the spring season?

Holly: May introduces us the sunbleached and soft summer shimmer of beachy tropics.  A call to remember the sunlit memories of youth and the sun on skin, sunsets, tropical summer breezes and the playfulness of life on vacation.

These collections feel new and exciting. What items are you most excited about?

Holly: I’m excited about the color across the story and how beautifully they play off each other in every category. So many blues against cheeky pinks and wild orchids…they really are stunning.  We layered in new fabrications that give the assortment a fresh take.

Spring trends: floral hues
“Strolling past french flower shops in St. Germain these beautiful hydrangeas surprise and delight – so refreshing to see new shades of orchids, pinks, lilacs and bright pinks.”

Spring trends: sweet sky blue
“Meringues…they looked almost too good to eat…almost! We had never seen meringues this dreamy in our lives. The colors were the perfect soft summer shades of periwinkle and sherbet.”

How do you translate what you see on the runways for everyday life?

Holly: We take the key feminine fashion details emerging from the runways and infuse them in a more relaxed way—delicate semi-sheer lace and fabrics, soft tiers and ruffles, delicate, feminine patterns, and inject soft rosey pinks. For example, we noticed a lot of dimensional pieces on the runway, so we infused 3D lace into new lingerie pieces. I’m so happy with how that turned out. I hope our customer loves it as much as we do. Dresses and lounge boast light burnout patterns, long over lean, sunbleached tropicals, hand dyed patterns in cools and warms emulate beachy waters and evening sunsets.

Neutrals are a solid foundation (pun very much intended) of Soma pieces, so what role do they play this spring?

Holly: Navy as a base is always a great choice and black and white are great to frame up a story.  In our key foundations collections–while we love all the new colors for spring–nothing works under a crisp white shirt or tee like a nude that almost vanishes under clothing.

Absolutely love Soma dresses. I own quite a few and have never had a problem with them, other than having to shorten them. At 5′ 3 they are always to long but I still love them! I honestly can say that I have never had anything I ordered be unacceptable. Great quality and love your sale prices! Loyal Soma fan.

I am a long time Soma customer of your short gowns and cropped pants outfit for sleep. However, what were you thinking with the new notch collar tops. These tops look like a pair of pajamas out of the 50’s. Also your round neck tops have changed. They are shorter in the middle and back and longer on the sides. Very weird looking. I bought a top from Sears to wear with your new wide leg cropped pants because I could not stand your new designs. Please go back to straight round neck tops for sleep!

Sorry to hear this, Helen. We’re always adding new items to our website and stores and hope you’ll find a more preferable style in future collections. Thank you for your feedback.
