  1. Understand the symptoms of a heart attack–in men and women. You may not have known this, but women and men’s symptoms when having a heart attack often present differently. AHA says that the most common symptom that both share is chest pain. Women should be aware that the following symptoms could be the beginning of a heart attack: Chest pain, but not always pain or pressure in the lower chest or upper abdomen, jaw, neck or upper back pain, nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath, fainting, indigestion, and extreme fatigue. Men should look out for the following symptoms of heart attack preemptively: Squeezing chest pain, jaw, neck or back pain, nausea or vomiting, and shortness of breath.

“Although men and women can experience chest pressure that feels like an elephant sitting across the chest, women can experience a heart attack without chest pressure,” Nieca Goldberg, M.D., medical director for the Joan H. Tisch Center for Women’s Health at NYU’s Langone Medical Center and an AHA volunteer told the American Heart Association. “Instead they may experience shortness of breath, pressure or pain in the lower chest or upper abdomen, dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting, upper back pressure or extreme fatigue.”

2. Get more sleep. Chances are, in today’s world and the pressures we all face daily, you aren’t getting enough sleep. Your body demands rest to be in optimal condition.
