Meet Your New Mom Friends

Every Mother, no matter her age, knows the importance of Mom Friends. Your “Mom friends” are the ones you laugh with, cry with and confide in. They support you through your journey of motherhood because they know what it is like to be on the same journey. In honor of Mother’s Day, we wanted to introduce you to five of our Mom friends here at Soma. We asked each of them to share their motherly advice, the “mom-tra” that they try and live by and of course, which Soma products they count on to support them each day.

Angela J. Kim, @mommydiary

Content creator, Creative mompreneur & mama of 4 (ages 16, 14, 4 and 15 months)

In three words, how would you describe yourself?

Creative, strong, intuitive.

What “mom advice” do you live by?

Always trust your intuition, moms know best.

Do you have a “mom-tra” (a mom mantra) that guides you?

No matter how hard a situation seems, it’s always temporary.

What person/persons or thing has most helped you navigate your journey of motherhood?

My mom. She was the first person to help me with my crying newborn when I returned from the hospital, the person who cooked for me and took care of me when I was recovering from childbirth and one who gave me advice about motherhood when I needed it most. I truly appreciate her presence in my motherhood journey.

What advice do you have for first-time moms?

Motherhood comes with a learning curve and you have to learn how to be a mom. It takes time and experience so be gentle on yourself as you navigate the transition from a woman to mother. Not everything will come naturally, including diapering, bathing, breastfeeding, swaddling, even holding and rocking your baby to sleep. You will love your baby so much that it hurts, but also wish to be alone and take a break. All of these feelings are normal and natural and doesn’t mean you’re a bad mother. Give yourself time, space and grace to grow into the mother you want to become.

What does Mother’s Day mean to you?

Moms spend every day of their lives doing things for other people whether it’s their kids or partners. I think mothers should be celebrated every day, but the reality is that mothers are the most underappreciated and underrecognized people in our society. Mothers feel the stress and burden of it all, but rarely complain about the lack because we are accustomed to being the caretaker and nurturer, rather than being cared for. Mother’s Day is the only day when a mother can feel pampered and special without having to do her usual housework. For me, it’s the only day I don’t do dishes, cleaning or laundry out of 365 days, the only day when my family tries to help me instead. I always end up doing some stuff of course, but it’s definitely less than any other day and I do feel special knowing that my family cares about me enough to try their best.

At Soma, our mission is to support women and create solutions for them based on their specific needs. As a mom, with so many things to juggle all of the time, what do you look for in your wardrobe foundations and what Soma products would you recommend for other women?

I look for classic, timeless pieces that are versatile and easy to wear. I choose quality over quantity and enjoy pieces that are soft and well made. Comfort, function and style are all important.  I love Soma’s Modal robe and sleepwear set. The material is so soft, and I love the way they drape over my body. It makes me feel comfortable and sexy. I also love the Restore collection that’s infused with aloe, I love how soft they are and how they feel against my skin. I especially like the bodysuit because it’s versatile for styling. It’s very on trend and looks lovely when paired with high waisted bottoms which moms love!

Writer, “celebrant of life’s little moments” and mom of 3 (ages 13, 11 and 8)

In three words, how would you describe yourself?

Optimistic, Creative, Energetic.

What “mom advice” do you live by?

My favorite mom advice is simple: Delight in and with your kids. We have so many responsibilities as parents and preparing our kids for the world can feel overwhelming. But the greatest impact we can possibly make to set them up with a solid foundation is to joyfully celebrate their existence and have fun with them. Explore the world together, read books together, dance with them, cook with them, craft with them, make messes with them, take walks with them, completely delight in these short years we have them in our homes. What matters most is that they remember you completely loved being with them.

Do you have a “mom-tra” (a mom mantra) that guides you?

“There is More.” It’s my favorite phrase I repeat to myself when I start to feel scarcity setting in—sad that my kids are getting older, sad that this magic time of raising little kids won’t last forever. I remind myself that there is always more in store—more good, more memories, more happiness. I challenge myself to keep a mindset of gratitude and abundance in motherhood.

What person/persons or thing has most helped you navigate your journey of motherhood?

My sister. She had three girls several years ahead of me and has weathered all the parenting storms and learned all the lessons. Her advice is so valuable, and it’s such a gift to talk parenting with someone who loves my kids like her own.

What advice do you have for first-time moms?

You don’t need anyone’s approval to do what you know is right for your child. It’s so easy, especially with social media, to follow the herd. But the best decisions come from sticking with your valuable parenting intuition, even if it’s different from what everyone else is doing with their kids.

What does Mother’s Day mean to you?

Mother’s Day is such a celebration of our gift of nurturing—and you don’t have to have given birth to be a nurturer. We can all name a long list of women who have nurtured us throughout the years—our mothers and grandmothers, special aunts, friends’ moms, grandmotherly coworkers and neighbors, girlfriends who show up for us. Sadly, not everyone has stories of a loving mother, but we all have the opportunity to nurture those we love. It’s one of women’s superpowers. I’m so thankful for the people in my life I get to nurture—but especially three I get to call my own.

Comfort is so important when we spend so much of our day running around taking care of everyone else, but there’s a big difference between frumpy comfort and classic comfort that looks good. I like pieces in my wardrobe that make me feel good wearing them—clothes that make me feel put together when often things are not in parenting. I personally love Soma’s vanishing edge underwear. I can wear them with tight workout leggings, and you really can’t see any lines. And they’re so comfortable and never budge or ride up which is so important in my busy life.

Ambitious, resilient, fun.

What “mom advice” do you live by?

Lead with love.

Do you have a “mom-tra” (a mom mantra) that guides you?

Enjoy the moment – time flies by so fast, don’t forget to slow down and appreciate the gift of motherhood.

What person/persons or thing has most helped you navigate your journey of motherhood?

The amazing examples of mothers that I am surrounded by and that I grew up with. My grandmothers and my mom and the best moms!

What advice do you have for first-time moms?

Block out the noise and follow your heart! You’ll know what’s best for your baby.

What does Mother’s Day mean to you?

It’s a celebration and recognition for everything that moms do day in and day out for our families.

I look for pieces that are comfortable, easy to slip on and off and great materials that feel good on my skin. That is why I love Soma’s Cool Nights pajamas – they are made from the best material and are so cozy! They also have amazing nursing bras – great quality and very comfortable. And I would also recommend bras from the Vanishing collection because who doesn’t love a smooth back and bottom under their clothes!?

Content Creator, Lifestyle Blogger, Mom of 2 (ages 23 and 21)

How would you describe yourself in three words?

Creative, diligent and personable

What “mom advice” do you live by?

Don’t sweat the small stuff…its mostly small stuff!

Do you have a “mom-tra” (a mom mantra) that guides you?

I love this quote by Angela Schwindt – “While we try to teach our children about life, our children teach us what life is all about.”

What person/persons or thing has most helped you navigate your journey of motherhood?

My mother and mother-law were both instrumental in helping me (and my husband) raise our children. They were always filled with great parenting advice and tips, especially when I was feeling overwhelmed when the kids were little. I was super busy building my career as the founding editor of an online magazine in NY and was lucky to be able to rely on them to provide extra special nurturing and care.

What advice do you have for first-time moms?

Make sure to carve out some alone time for you and your partner. I used to have one night a week that was reserved as date night. We also travelled without our children on a trip once a year–having the help of our parents really came in handy here! Also, don’t forget about your self-care. You need to take good care of yourself first before you can take good care of others.

What does Mother’s Day mean to you?

For me it is a time to reflect and show gratitude to all women and mothers who have been mentors and caregivers.

At Soma, our mission is to support women and create solutions for them based on their specific needs. As a mom, with so many things to juggle all of the time, what do you look for in your wardrobe foundations and what Soma products would you recommend for other women?

I look to wear classic pieces where fashion meet’s function. So that means starting off with some comfy, well-fitting bras and undies. I also like to wear basic yet stylish pieces that I can accessorize easily. I usually get trendy with bags and shoes.  The pj’s and robes are literally as soft as butter and I love their bralettes because they are well designed, flattering and fit perfectly. I also love that Soma is female-founded brand—they understand the needs of women and the importance of body positivity. There’s truly a style for everyone, no matter what size or shape!

Content Creator, CHD Warrior and Advocate, Mom of 2 boys (ages 2 and 4)

How would you describe yourself in three words?

Resilient, optimistic and patient.

What “mom advice” do you live by?

Remember that your voice becomes a part of your child’s ‘inner voice.” Your children will always remember how you made them feel, what you told them about themselves, how you encouraged them.

Do you have a “mom-tra” (a mom mantra) that guides you?

“This too shall pass.” Every situation is only for a little while. We won’t be able to hold them forever. So even when the whining is out of control and I’m ready for solo vacay on a beach in the middle of nowhere (I’ll settle for 20 minutes alone in the bathroom), I try to remember that they’re only little for so long!

What person/persons or thing has most helped you navigate your journey of motherhood?

My mom was amazing and loving and I love that we’ve grown to be friends. Her examples, coupled with extra patience and prayer have really helped me along the way.

What advice do you have for first-time moms?

Don’t worry, things will come naturally. You were meant to be a mother and here to guide your child for a reason. Everything isn’t easy, but if you trust yourself, are kind to yourself and don’t make permanent decisions based on temporary feelings, you’ll be fine. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help!

What does Mother’s Day mean to you?

Mother’s Day represents love for me. Motherhood is such a selfless journey and all I feel is gratitude and appreciation on that day for Mothers and Mother figures.

At Soma, our mission is to support women and create solutions for them based on their specific needs. As a mom, with so many things to juggle all of the time, what do you look for in your wardrobe foundations and what Soma products would you recommend for other women?

I absolutely love pieces that are easy to grab and go or serve multiple purposes. Items that can take me from the car line, to the store and even to a lunch date. The tops and dresses with built in bras are amazing for this! I also love pajama separates that coincide with your long robes. I’m obsessed with the cool nights line. I’m naturally a warm person and can get warm easily! I’m always cool in the sleep collection and can sleep comfortably. The fabric moves so well, keeps its shape, doesn’t get stuck if I’m tossing and turning.
