6 Tips for Overcoming Gym-timidation

Follow these workout tips for your best session.

We all have excuses for avoiding workouts (no time, too tired, too expensive) but you may not have heard of one of the most common reasons for avoiding the gym…it’s called gym-timidation. We get it—the gym can be an intimidating place, where the fear of being judged is real. We’re here to help. As we focus on wellness this month, we’re turning gym-timidation into gym-spiration with these 6 confidence-building workout tips.

1. Go the Gym During Off-Peak Hours

Find a time when it’s less crowded, like later in the morning, at night or on weekends. When you don’t have an audience, you feel more confident trying out new machines or mastering new moves. It’s helpful to keep in mind, most people aren’t watching you—they’re focused on their own routines.

2. Find a Friend

Friends are the best confidence builders. Not only do they hold us to our workout schedules, they also make us laugh along the way. (FYI, laughing burns calories.) Plus, it’s always easier trying something new when you have a friend nearby.

3. Work With a Fitness Trainer

If you’re new to the gym, try working with an expert. They’ll guide you through an initial routine, provide workout tips and help you stay on track, with plenty of positive reinforcement along the way.

4. Update Your Workout Clothes

Workout tips to have you looking great

Trade in your worn bra and gym shorts for a new supportive sport bra and matching leggings. There’s nothing more motivating than a chance to show off your new sporty outfit. After all, when you look good you feel good. Look for moisture wicking, breathable and quick dry fabrics for sweat-proof confidence.

5. Make a Plan Before You Go

Schedule your workouts and plan your routines. You can even write them down on an index card, if that helps. This way, you know exactly what to expect.

6. Create a Playlist

Choose music that motivates you and make a playlist ahead of time. There’s nothing more distracting than having to stop and switch-out your music mid-workout. Not only does music help you stay in step, a familiar song puts you in your comfort zone.
